MCSE, PMP, MCDBA. Women in Information Technology.

Why are more women not pursuing careers in Information technology. Lets face it IT is a male dominated career path. Some studies suggest that the ratio is anywhere from 9 to 1 or 6 to 1 in information technology. In my company alone we have 23 Information technology professionals and Every last one of them is male. Why are women not studying for popular IT certifications like the MCSE or PMP.

Graduates with computer science degrees and IT certifications will enjoy high starting salaries and plenty of job opportunities in the near and long term future, so why aren't we seeing more women in information technology training.

The problem seems to be the image of IT professionals. The typical image of the IT profession consists of a man, with a blackberry or other pda on his hip, three pens in his top left pocket and an antisocial attitude. This image will recruit women about as effectively as a sieve will hold water. So to bring more women into the field we need to upgrade the image. A more gender friendly and frankly a more up to date image of today's IT professional is just what the doctor ordered if we are to see more women in IT .
